Istanbul Layover: How Many Hours You Need and What to See

About 10 hours between flights is enough to leave Istanbul Airport and see Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. We run private layover tours from the airport, and this is how we plan the time.
How many hours do you need?
We ask for a layover of at least 10 hours. On a 10-hour layover, the time goes roughly like this:
- About 1 hour for passport control and meeting your driver
- 45 to 90 minutes on the road to the Old City, depending on traffic
- The same again on the way back
- At the airport before your next flight: about 3 hours if you have bags to check in again, 2 hours if they went straight through
That leaves about 3 to 4.5 hours in the city, or an hour more if your bags went straight through. Traffic makes the biggest difference, so we plan around your flight times and keep the return simple. With 12 hours or more, you can slow down or add a stop.
Can you leave the airport on a layover?
Yes, as long as you can enter Turkey. You go through passport control like any arriving passenger, so carry your passport and check before you fly whether your nationality needs a visa or e-Visa. Turkey's official site for this is evisa.gov.tr.
What do you do with your luggage?
When you check in for your first flight, ask the airline whether your bags will go straight through to your final destination. For anything you have with you in Istanbul, the airport has left-luggage offices on the arrivals floor, next to the domestic passenger exit and opposite exit 13. There are also lockers near gates 1 and 6 on the departures level.
What can you see in that time?
Stay in the Old City. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and the Grand Bazaar are close enough to walk between, so you spend little of your time getting from one to the next. Your guide chooses the order based on your flight times and what you most want to see.
Two things can change the plan. Mosques close to visitors for a short time during each prayer, and for longer at Friday noon prayer. The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays.
What should you bring?
Bring your passport, comfortable shoes, and a card or cash for lunch and museum tickets. To enter a mosque, shoulders and knees must be covered and women also cover their hair. You can bring your own scarf, or use the covers available at the entrance (some mosques charge 2 to 3 USD). Shoes come off inside.
The free Turkish Airlines tour or a private tour?
Turkish Airlines has a free programme called Touristanbul for international connecting passengers with 6 to 24 hours at Istanbul Airport. It runs at set tour times, so your layover has to fit them, and the airline's rules decide which tickets qualify. If you are flying with them and the times work, it is worth checking.
A private tour costs more because it is built around your group alone. Your guide follows your flight times and adjusts the route as you go, and nobody else joins.
What does our layover tour include?
Private airport transfers both ways and a licensed English-speaking guide. Lunch and museum entrance fees are not included, and you pay for tickets at the site. You can cancel up to 48 hours before the tour for a full refund minus the payment processing fee (up to 5%).
To book, send us your flight times through the Istanbul layover tour page. There is nothing to pay when you send your request. If you are staying overnight in Istanbul, have a look at the Istanbul Classical Tour.
