How to Visit Göbekli Tepe from Istanbul (2026 Guide)

Göbekli Tepe is one of the most important archaeological sites on Earth — and, for most travellers, one of the least visited. It sits in southeastern Türkiye, a short flight from Istanbul, and you can see it in a single day. Here is everything you need to plan the trip.

What is Göbekli Tepe?

Göbekli Tepe ("Potbelly Hill") is the oldest known temple in the world. It was built around 11,600 years ago — about 6,000 years before Stonehenge and 7,000 before the pyramids of Giza — by hunter-gatherers, before farming, pottery or writing existed. Its great T-shaped stone pillars, some over five metres tall, are carved with foxes, boars, snakes, scorpions and vultures. The discovery changed what archaeologists thought about the beginning of civilisation, and the site has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 2018.

Where is Göbekli Tepe?

Göbekli Tepe is about 15 km northeast of Şanlıurfa, a historic city in southeastern Türkiye close to the Syrian border, in the region once known as Upper Mesopotamia. Şanlıurfa has its own airport (GAP), with daily flights from both Istanbul airports.

How to get to Göbekli Tepe from Istanbul

The easiest way is to fly. Flights from Istanbul to Şanlıurfa take around two hours. From the airport it is a short drive to the site, but there is little public transport, so most visitors go with a driver or a tour. Going by road from Istanbul takes well over a day each way and is not practical for a short trip.

Can you visit Göbekli Tepe in one day?

Yes. With an early flight out and an evening flight back you have a full day on the ground — enough for Göbekli Tepe, the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum, Balıklıgöl and the old bazaar. On our private Göbekli Tepe day tour from Istanbul we pick you up at your hotel for a flight around 07:30, a private guide and car meet you in Şanlıurfa, and you are back on the evening flight (usually around 21:05). Flights and entrance fees are included. If you would rather not rush, the 2-day Göbeklitepe and Şanlıurfa tour adds a night in the city.

What to see in Şanlıurfa

  • Göbekli Tepe: a visitor centre explains the site, and walkways under a protective roof lead around the main stone circles.
  • Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum: one of the largest museums in Türkiye, with finds from Göbekli Tepe and the region, including the "Urfa Man", one of the oldest known life-size human statues.
  • Balıklıgöl (Pool of Sacred Fish): peaceful pools and mosques tied to the legend of the Prophet Abraham.
  • The old bazaar and Gümrük Han: covered markets, copper workshops and the 16th-century Gümrük Han caravanserai, where locals sit over tea and coffee in the courtyard — and the place to try Urfa kebab and çiğ köfte, which comes from Şanlıurfa.
  • Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum: next to the Archaeology Museum, late Roman floor mosaics found in the city, including the famous Amazon queens.
  • Şanlıurfa Castle: the citadel on the hill above Balıklıgöl, with two tall Roman columns and the best view over the old city.
  • The Cave of Abraham (Mevlid-i Halil): by tradition the birthplace of the Prophet Abraham, a place of pilgrimage beside a mosque complex.
  • The old city centre: honey-coloured stone houses, narrow streets and courtyards around Balıklıgöl and the bazaar.

Our day tour covers Göbekli Tepe, the Archaeology Museum, Balıklıgöl and the bazaar; the other sights need more time — ask us, or see the 2-day tour.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are the most pleasant. Summer in Şanlıurfa is very hot, often above 40°C, so start at Göbekli Tepe early in the morning. Winter is cool and quiet.

Is Şanlıurfa safe?

Yes. Şanlıurfa is a busy city visited by many Turkish and foreign travellers every year. With a guide and driver you also avoid any worry about getting around.

Tips for your visit

  • Wear comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen — there is little shade at the site.
  • At Balıklıgöl's mosques, cover shoulders and knees; women need a headscarf.
  • Carry some cash for the bazaar and for lunch.
